What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is known as cold therapy.  Cold therapy is generally used to relieve muscle pain, sprains, and swelling. Especially when there is inflammation involved.

What does Cryotherapy consist of?

Cryotherapy can range from the use of icepacks,  immersion in ice baths, and cold chambers. We use more localized treatments. These treatments include the application of ice or gel packs. They are typically used for acute injury situations. Some examples are sprain/strain, tendonitis, edema, and post-surgical pain.

What is Cryotherapy used for?

Cryotherapy is known to reduce swelling, pain, and muscle spasms. It's something that can also be done at home or at your office.

How are ice packs used on Cryotherapy?

The ice pack therapy consists of applying cold temperatures to an injured part of the body.

First, an ice pack is placed over an injured area. The area then absorbs heat from the injury.  Then, there's a decrease in local metabolism and lower enzymatic activity. This drives less oxygen demand. What does all this mean? It means that it reduces the blood flow and inflammation in the area. As a result, this improves swelling, redness, burn, and pain.

The cold also slows the nerve conduction speed and some reactions in the muscle which with spasticity (tight muscles).

Do not use ice packs for too long it can damage skin tissues!

What is cold compression therapy?

Cold compression is the application of external pressure. External pressure helps prevent edema or swelling. This avoids fluid loss from the vessels in the area which makes it more difficult for them to accumulate and create swelling. We may use a combination of both compression and Cryotherapy.

Additionally, when done correctly, compression therapy works very well on patients after important surgeries.

What are the benefits of Cryotherapy?

Generally, localized Cryotherapy is used to alleviate minor injuries and soreness. But other major benefits are:

  • Pain management: Cold packs reduce pain. Cryotherapy can be used in both acute and chronic pain.
  • Decrease muscle spasms: Cold therapy reduces sensitivity and therefore, it reduces pain and also muscle spasms.
  • Lower inflammation: Cold therapy slows inflammatory response with its vasoconstriction effect.
  • Edema management:  Cryotherapy helps to reduce edema or swelling as well as hemorrhage. This is because it blocks excessive fluid from accessing the area.
  • Reduce spasticity: Muscle cooling reduces muscle stretch activity. Cryotherapy numbs nerves and reduces nerve conduction. This reduces fatigue in MS patients aside from spasticity.
  • Assist with pregnancy back pain, muscle spasms, and cramps: Cryotherapy can relieve many of the symptoms that so many pregnant women suffer without taking medication, including swollen ankles.
  • Manage acute post-surgical conditions: After a surgical procedure, ice packs can assist in managing pain, muscle spasm, and edema.

Is Cryotherapy effective after a car accident?

After a car accident, patients can use both heat and cold therapy. This helps with their healing process quicker.  Cryotherapy is recommended for use when an injury first occurs. This is because it can reduce inflammation and pain quickly.

Is Cryotherapy therapy safe for kids?

Associations like the NJSIAA (New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association) are pushing protocols to fight the 'national prescription drug epidemic' among young athletes. Sports-related injuries in kids are on the rise. About 2 million kids under the age of 14 experience injury. Additionally, another 3.5 million receive medical treatment for sports injuries every year. Also, overuse injuries are responsible for nearly half of all sports injuries to middle and high school students.

Fortunately, cryotherapy is a non-invasive drug-free treatment.

Research has shown that cold therapy reduces pain and inflammation and significantly accelerates healing.

Is Cryotherapy therapy safe for seniors?

The process has various benefits for seniors such as reducing inflammation and helping with arthritis. So yes, it's safe for seniors.
